Thingvellir Parking: Choose a Lot and Check Payment

Choose Thingvellir P1, P2 or P5 by the walk. Read dated official vehicle rates, payment and plate instructions, with separate activity and overnight checks.

Official vehicle parking rates, checked October 2026

Use the stated vehicle seating category rather than only the occupants travelling today. The park says payment covers P1, P2 and P5 on the day paid. Recheck the current official terms before payment.

Thingvellir parking starts with the walk you want to take. P1 at Hakið serves the upper end of Almannagjá and the visitor centre. P2 is east and below Öxarárfoss. P5 at Valhöll is nearest the church and Silfra. Choose the lot by that task, then follow the current payment instructions for your vehicle.

The park's parking charge is separate from ordinary land access and the paid exhibition. The official page says one day's payment covers P1, P2 and P5 on that payment date. Use the correct vehicle category and registration. A Silfra guest still needs the supplier's meeting instructions; the guest lot and activity check-in are different places.

Checked: 15 October 2026. All prices, lot descriptions and payment terms here come from the park's official parking page, checked October 2026. Recheck that page and the signs at the lot before paying. This guide does not collect parking payments.

Thingvellir parking: choose P1, P2 or P5 by the first stop

P1 is the Hakið lot at the upper end of Almannagjá. The visitor centre is there. It can suit a visit starting with the exhibition or upper view, followed by a walk down into the visitor area. Keep the return in mind: a route that starts downhill may finish with a climb back to the car.

P2 is Efri-Vellir, which the park places east and below Öxarárfoss. It can suit a waterfall-led plan when the marked approach is open. Read the Öxarárfoss walking guide before treating this as a direct step from the car to the falls. The lot name does not describe every stair or surface.

P5 is Valhöll, nearest the church and Silfra according to the park. That location can serve a lower-area visit. It does not make it the right place for every tour or activity vehicle. Follow the booked supplier's final directions for check-in.

Choose the return as well as the outward walk

Use the official park map to connect the lot with your planned sights. A path between two places may be open on an old map and closed on the day. Read the current notice when you arrive. Do not cross fragile ground to avoid a closed connection.

If the party needs a shorter route, settle that before leaving the car. A nearby-looking marker can still involve steps or a slope. Pick a clear meeting place if anyone stays behind. Do not assume the exhibition building or another facility will be open for waiting.

Current Thingvellir parking fees by vehicle category

The official page lists a motorcycle at 400 ISK and a passenger car with five or fewer seats at 1,000 ISK. A passenger car with six to nine seats is listed at 1,200 ISK. These figures were checked October 2026. Use the service’s vehicle category rather than the number of people travelling today.

The bus rate for ten to nineteen seats is 2,200 ISK. For twenty to thirty-two seats it is 3,800 ISK. For thirty-three or more, it is 4,200 ISK. The table gives the complete checked list with its source. Do not choose a smaller category because some seats are empty.

What the fee covers

The park describes this as a service fee for operating and servicing parking areas. It states that the fee allows parking at P1, P2 and P5 on the day of payment. Read that as a dated parking term, not a pass for every paid thing in the park.

The tickets and payment guide separates the exhibition and booked activities. A parking receipt does not reserve an exhibition place, a campsite or a Silfra trip. Keep those items separate when planning the day's costs.

How the park describes payment

The official page lists payment machines at the visitor centre and nearby restroom building, plus P2 and P5. It also identifies Checkit as the company handling the parking service and says payment can be made through that service. Use the route linked by the park rather than a sponsored search result for a similar name.

At Hakið, the park describes a camera system that matches vehicle plates against payment records. Read the current sign and enter the registration carefully. A small typing error can mean the record does not match the vehicle. Confirm the plate shown before finishing the payment.

Keep a usable record of payment

Save the ticket or receipt in the form provided. Keep the date and registration visible in your own records. Those details help if you need to ask about the charge. A car photo alone does not prove the payment. Do not post personal payment details in a public review.

If a machine or online process fails, use the park's current contact instructions. Do not assume a failed screen means the charge was waived. A guest who cannot establish payment should resolve the issue with the park or named collection service. This guide does not decide disputes or invent a grace period.

Rental cars need the correct plate too

Read the registration on the car you collected. Do not copy an old rental email or a previous trip’s number. A rental category name is not the plate. Keep the current agreement and parking receipt together if you need to ask the rental company about a later charge.

The rental agreement may have its own terms for handling unpaid fees. This page does not state an administration charge because that depends on the company and contract. Check your agreement directly. A park fee and a rental-company handling charge are different items.

Disabled-permit instructions need an extra step

The park's checked page says guests with a disabled parking permit in the car do not need to pay. They must also have the plate removed from the camera system. The park gives a Hakið visitor-centre route and email addresses for this step. The permit does not by itself complete that camera-record step.

Read the current instructions and contact the park if the process is unclear. Do not assume that displaying a permit automatically updates the system. The rule concerns parking payment; it is not a statement that every route from a lot meets every access need.

Check the actual walking surface

A payment exemption and a suitable path are separate questions. Ask about the route you want to use, including slopes and steps. The visitor-centre guide distinguishes the Hakið centre from Leirar services. Naming the right place makes it easier to ask a clear access question.

If a member of the party needs a shorter walk, plan it from the appropriate lot. Do not use a car park label as proof of a step-free route to every nearby feature. Current path conditions can matter as much as the distance.

Silfra parking is not the whole meeting-point plan

P5 is the public lot nearest Silfra, according to the park's parking page. A booked supplier can still require you to walk to a separate check-in area. Read the Silfra meeting-point explanation and then the exact directions on your booking.

Do not park in an activity or service area simply because it looks closer to the water. Guest parking and operating vehicles have different tasks. Leave time to pay, get dressed and find the representative. A generic Silfra pin can lead you to the attraction without making you ready for check-in.

Keep the activity clock separate

The supplier's arrival deadline is not the moment you should turn into the lot. Add the tasks between the car and the group. If the road delays you, contact the supplier using the booking instructions. Do not assume a parking payment protects an activity place after missed check-in.

For a sightseeing-only visit, choose the lot for the walk rather than the appeal of the water activity. Silfra itself is not an invitation to enter the water independently. Read the park and supplier rules for the separate activity before considering any water access.

Moving between lots during the day

The official payment term covers the named lots on the payment date. That can help a party whose visits are better served by different arrivals. It does not guarantee a space at the next lot. Read local signs and park only where allowed, even when the fee has been paid.

Decide whether moving the car actually improves the visit. A short connection on the map can still take time to drive, find a space and regroup. If the marked walk fits everyone, leaving the car in one place can be simpler. If it does not fit, a new lot may be useful when lawful access is available.

Parking is not overnight camping permission

A day's parking term should not be used as a campsite booking. The camping guide describes the park's designated sites and seasonal differences. A camper or motorhome still needs the correct overnight place and payment.

The same separation applies to a rural hotel. Compare Thingvellir-area stays for a bed that fits the route. A car park close to the next day's walk is not an alternative to a permitted overnight plan.

Parking checks before you walk away

  • Lot: Does it suit the first stop and the return?
  • Signs: Are the current instructions and restrictions clear?
  • Category: Have you selected the correct vehicle class?
  • Plate: Does the registration match the car you are using?
  • Record: Have you kept the confirmation or receipt?
  • Next payment: Is the exhibition or activity a separate item?
  • Meeting point: Have you allowed time from the lot to booked check-in?

Use the park overview for the wider visit. If you prefer organised transport, the Thingvellir tour guide explains what different formats solve. A tour fare should be checked for its own inclusions rather than combined with the private-car parking process by assumption.

Frequently asked questions

Does one payment cover P1 and P5 on the same day?

The park's official page says the fee covers P1, P2 and P5 on the day of payment, checked October 2026. Recheck the current signs and use the correct registration. That parking term does not reserve a space or cover separate exhibition, campsite or activity payments. Keep those bookings distinct.

Should you pay by the number of people in the car?

Use the vehicle category stated by the parking service. The official list distinguishes cars by seating category, with separate bus bands. Empty seats do not turn a larger vehicle into a smaller class. If the category is unclear, ask the park or service before selecting a tariff rather than guess from current occupancy.

Does a disabled permit finish the camera-system process?

Not by itself under the checked instructions. The park says a permit holder does not pay but must arrange plate removal from the camera system through the visitor centre or stated email route. Read the current process and contact the park if needed. Payment status and the suitability of a walking route remain separate questions.

Can you camp overnight in a paid visitor lot?

A parking payment is not an overnight camping permit. Use the park's designated campsite plans and current rules for the vehicle or tent. The daytime lot description answers where to leave a vehicle for a visit. It does not establish permission to stay the night or use campsite services.

Verdict on Thingvellir parking

Choose Thingvellir parking by the planned walk. Complete the current payment process with the right plate and vehicle category. P1 serves Hakið, P2 sits below Öxarárfoss and P5 is nearest the church and Silfra. Keep the exhibition, activities and overnight plans separate from the day's parking charge.

The empty gravel-turnout photograph is AI-generated and generic. It does not depict P1, P2, P5 or any named park facility.
